Intel launches Core micro-architecture at subdued IDF
28 June 2006
News
Intel set a different tone at the Spring 2006 Intel Developer Forum (IDF), focusing on the technology and the increasing competitive pressures it faces with very little glitz, reports In-Stat. A significant forum event was Intel's launching of the Core micro-architecture, which the high-tech market research firm says will aid the company in a competitive position with AMD, in desktop PCs and DP volume servers, while maintaining the lead in mobile PCs.
"Intel is complementing the strength of the Core architecture with other silicon and software solutions that make up its platform strategy and will be a key strategic advantage going forward by offering enhanced performance, reliability, manageability, and power management," says Jim McGregor, In-Stat analyst.
According to In-Stat other items worth noting at IDF were: the aggressive launch and focus on ultra mobile PC (UMPC) solutions by Intel in conjunction with similar launches by Microsoft, Samsung, and other companies at CeBit; a demonstration of a wireless USB (WUSB) and Internet Protocol (IP) over UWB solutions with similar demonstrations by many other vendors; the launch of Virtualisation for Directed I/O (VTD), which will enable complete virtual system partitions.
