Current sensor has wide input voltage range

3 May 2006 Power Electronics / Power Management

Supertex has released a new high side, current sensing IC. The HV7800 IC features a very wide operating range of 8 V-450 V d.c, which allows it to work with DC power systems of 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V, as well as off-line AC systems of 85 V to 265 V. The IC operates by sensing the voltage across an external resistor and transmitting this reading to the ground-referenced circuit at a gain of one with a typical accuracy of ±1%.

High side current sensing allows the ground to be undisturbed when sensing input or load currents. Grounding system impedances in low side current sensing often causes signal degradation or electromagnetic interference. Because the HV7800 is designed to be used on the high side of a circuit, it avoids these sensing problems and provides a much easier sensing implementation says the company.

The wide input voltage range of the HV7800 allows it to be used to monitor current in telecom and base station applications, power management applications, and LCD TVs with LED backlight applications. According to Supertex the IC solves many current sense design problems like high voltage, high precision, fast response time and space considerations. The HV7800 is available in a SOT23-5 package.
