First embedded core module with integrated wired and wireless networking

3 May 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

Digi International has introduced what it claims is the industry's first embedded core module with fully integrated wired 10/100 Mbit Ethernet and secure 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN networking capabilities.

The ConnectCoreTM Wi-9C is said to be the first embedded core module to allow device manufacturers to design in both wired and wireless networking functionality with a single solution.

"With the significant improvements in wireless LAN technology and security, end user demand for wireless devices is rapidly growing," said Joel Young, vice president of engineering, Digi International. "Wireless is the future. The ConnectCore Wi-9C makes it easier for device manufacturers to meet this growing demand by providing a single secure solution for both wired and wireless networking."

Powered by Digi's ARM9-based NetSilicon NS9360 processor, the ConnectCore Wi-9C is a complete and fully integrated main processing system with secure wired and wireless LAN capabilities. It is also pre-certified to eliminate costly certification delays during wireless product development.

"Wireless design requires regulatory approval of a device in each region in which it is deployed," Young adds. "By pre-certifying the ConnectCore Wi-9C, Digi eliminates these costly and time-consuming certification processes for the device manufacturer. And because the ConnectCore Wi-9C uses Digi's own wireless radio technology, we can provide long-term product availability and ensure customers are not tied to the typically short, consumer market driven lifecycles of traditional radio chipsets."

Tailored to meet the requirements of embedded product design, the ConnectCore Wi-9C is interchangeable and pin-compatible with the company's ConnectCore 9C, an embedded core module for wired networking. A single design and development effort can now result in a product line with both wired and combined wired/wireless networking capabilities.

The ConnectCore Wi-9C is fully RoHS-compliant and provides up to 256 MB of SDRAM and Flash memory along with integrated wired and wireless networking in a compact SO-DIMM form factor. It features a high level of wireless security and is rated for -40 to 85°C operation.

Digi also has available NET+Works, Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 and Linux development kits which minimise traditional software designs risks and shorten the development process.
