Cross-licence agreement for white LEDs and LED system technology
8 March 2006
News
Osram Opto Semiconductors and Avago Technologies have announced that the companies have signed a limited patent cross-licence agreement. Osram has granted Avago a patent licence for several patents to manufacture and sell white LEDs with special conversion technology, and SMT LEDs.
Avago Technologies has granted Osram a patent licence covering LED systems, including systems for projection and flat-panel LCDs.
Conversion technology for LEDs enables the production of white LEDs using blue emitting InGaN (indium gallium nitride)-based chips and a suitable fluorescent converter. SMT mounting forms are very small and allow easy processing in industrial series manufacturing. Osram (www.osram-os.com) holds patents for several mounting forms and packages for SMT LEDs, and has previously signed licensing agreements with other optics manufacturers.
Avago Technologies (www.avagotech.com) is a leader in innovative colour management LED systems for backlighting and illumination. The company holds patents for technology that makes it possible to maintain constant colour and brightness over the lifetime of RGB LEDs, including variations in ambient temperature. This technology allows LCD manufacturers to achieve true-to-life colours and maintain a set colour point over the life of a television's display.
