SMT flat coil inductors deliver up to 30 A in low profile
30 November 2005
Passive Components
Pulse offers a series of low profile, surface mount flat coil inductors, the PG0255NL range. With a saturation current rating up to 30 A and a heating current rating up to 38 A, these inductors are designed for multiphase voltage regulator modules (VRMs) supporting the increasing current needs of Vcore power in DC-DC applications.
The four inductors in the series have inductance values from 0,2 to 2,2 μH. This range gives VRM designers the ability to tailor their designs for faster transient response with the lower inductance values or to lower switching losses using lower switching frequencies with the higher inductance values.
The inductors' low direct current resistance (DCR) of 0,55 to 7,0 mΩ and low alternating current loss result in lower copper losses. Pulse's flat coil inductor windings are made of rectangular copper (flat wire) wound helically, similar to a spring. The larger surface area results in a reduced skin effect loss, while more copper in the same volume reduces the DC resistance in a low profile. These components measure 11,5 x 10,3 mm with a low profile of 4,0 mm maximum. Operating temperature ranges from -40 to 125°C.
