550 kHz dual controller eliminates two separate DC/DC converters

Power Electronics / Power Management
Linear Technology's LTC1874, a dual output current mode step-down DC-DC converter that includes two 550 kHz controllers in a small, narrow 16-lead SSOP, is claimed to reduce layout space by replacing the need for two DC-DC converters and allows the use of small inductors and capacitors. The input voltage range for each controller is 2,5 to 10 V with an output adjustable as low as 0,8 V. Each controller consumes only 270 µA but can deliver up to 5 A of load current. The IC's compact dual output voltage design is ideal for powering ASICs, microcontrollers and DSPs in applications ranging from telecom to portable devices.
The LTC1874 drives external P-channel MOSFETs and uses sense resistors to accurately deliver power to the load at up to 94% efficiency. Further, the use of P-channel MOSFETS also maximises the life of a battery source by allowing very low dropout operation. The IC provides +2,5% output voltage accuracy and is configured with Burst Mode operation, which enhances efficiency at low output current. Each controller has a separate shutdown pin allowing full control of each output voltage.
