New level of power density in a compact package

2 November 2005 Power Electronics / Power Management

A new uModule (micro-module) from Linear Technology provides designers with a complete 10 A switching power supply in a 15 x 15 mm footprint, low profile (2,8 mm) land grid array package. The LTM4600 DC/DC uModule is a complete standalone surface-mount power supply that can be handled and assembled like a standard integrated circuit. It is a synchronous switchmode DC/DC step-down regulator with built-in inductor, supporting power components and compensation circuitry. By simplifying power system development, the new high-density power supply reduces development time for a broad range of systems. The LTM4600HVEV accommodates a wide input voltage range of 4,5 V to 28 V, (the LTM4600EV accommodates 4,5 V to 20 V). Synchronous current mode operation allows it to deliver superior transient response and up to 10 A continuous current (14 A peak) at up to 92% efficiency. It requires only input and output bulk capacitors and a single resistor to set the output voltage within a range of 0,6 V to 5 V. Its low profile enables it to be soldered onto the back side of a circuit board, freeing up valuable board space.
