Linux USB interface for UPSs

19 October 2005 Power Electronics / Power Management

MGE UPS Systems has introduced a Linux USB interface for UPSs. The company, a leader in high availability power solutions, is a major contributor to the Network UPS Tools Open Source project and is now delivering USB drivers for connecting UPSs under Unix/Linux. This complements the company's UPS network management system which is also 100% compatible with Unix and Linux.

MGE joined Network UPS Tools (NUT) (http://eu1.networkupstools.org) in 2001. "The project was considered to be the most promising for supporting UPS systems under Linux," said Arnaud Quette, MGE's Unix/Linux development manager.

"NUT version 1.0.0 and the modules for serial port communications and SNMP were released in 2002. It took about two more years with several projects carried out in parallel to arrive at complete, standardised support for connecting UPSs to the USB port, as the USB structure (HID) is more complex for uninterruptible power supplies," says Quette.

MGE's involvement in the Open Source community enables it to provide support for UPS systems through partnerships with the key players in the Linux world.
