Combination PLC and industrial PC

21 September 2005 Computer/Embedded Technology

Phoenix Contact's S MAX 5000 is a highly available combination of industrial PC, PLC and fieldbus master and is used in mechanical and plant engineering, building automation and in the water/sewage sector.

The device includes the Embedded XP or CE.net boot operating system and is equipped with NVRAM, PLC switch and diagnostic LEDs. The result is that it behaves like a conventional PLC. Combining these with the functions of industrial PCs, communication across all standard interfaces and well-known bus systems is possible.

Unlike the S MAX 5006 machine control system, the S MAX 5000 has no display feature. If required, it is possible to connect an external touch monitor and use the device for operating and visualisation functions. To guarantee high availability, the entire system works without a fan or critical plug connectors, and with a compact flash memory.

The high performance of the system makes it possible to combine different software systems and perform extensive control functions. LEDs located on its housing display fieldbus diagnostics. The PLC is operated using a Run/Stop/Reset button. To avoid problems when switching off the S MAX 5000, residual data is stored in NVRAM.
