Safety relays certified to IEC 61508

10 August 2005 Switches, Relays & Keypads

Phoenix Contact's PRS safety relay modules for process technology are among the first safety products to be certified to SIL 3/IEC 61508. Conventional safety relay modules have largely had a very high start-up current that the control system interprets as a short circuit.

The PSR-ESP safety relays provide optimised start-up behaviour and have two safely isolated, redundant closers and one 22,5 mm wide opener that can switch up to 250 V a.c./6 A. These are used to electrically isolate field applications from the control system or to adjust the voltage or power.

The international IEC 61508 standard is relevant for electronic applications, particularly in the fields of process technology and chemical, mechanical and process engineering. The compact safety relays, together with the safety-related controls and master system, form an integral part of the safety chain.
