Microchip Technology has announced the addition of eight new Flash 8-bit PIC microcontrollers, along with new 'tiny' package options, to its low pincount microcontroller portfolio.
* Microchip's PIC10F family, the only 6-pin microcontroller family on the market, now offers increased performance and an integrated analog-to-digital converter.
Key features of the new PIC10F220 and PIC10F222 include: two channels of 8-bit ADC; precision 8 MHz internal oscillator (for up to 2 MIPS); 256 to 512 instructions of Flash; 25 mA source/sink I/O current; 100 nA low power sleep current; wide operating voltage (2 to 5,5 V); ICSP technology.
* Microchip has also added the 8-bit ADC, faster internal oscillator, and a comparator module, to its baseline 8 and 14-pin microcontrollers.
Key features of the new 8-pin PIC12F510 (PDIP, SOIC and MSOP packages) and 14-pin PIC16F506 (PDIP, SOIC and TSSOP packages) include: up to two comparators; up to three channels of 8-bit ADC; precision 8 MHz internal oscillator; 1024 instruction Flash program memory; 100 nA low power sleep current; wide operating voltage (2 to 5,5 V); ICSP technology.
* Also introduced is what Microchip says is a cost-effective and code-compatible migration path from existing 8- and 14-pin package options up to 20-pin microcontrollers with a richer set of peripherals. The peripheral enhancements on the PIC16F685/687/689/690 devices include a new comparator module with more internal and external connections, and a 10-bit ADC with up to 12 channels. Additionally, the onboard I²C synchronous serial port has address masking to support multiple addresses. The enhanced capture/compare/PWM module incorporates 'PWM steering', allowing output to multiple pins under software control.
Additional key features include: PMBus protocol support; precision 8 MHz, software-selectable internal oscillator; nanoWatt low power technology; LIN-capable enhanced USART; two comparators with set-reset latch mode; ultra low power wake-up; software enabled brown-out reset.
Tiny new package
In addition, the new 20-pin 16F685/687/689/690 devices, along with another ten 8 and 14-pin PIC microcontrollers are being offered in new lead (Pb) free 4 x 4 mm QFN package options. These are 50% to 70% smaller than standard SOIC and SSOP packages, says the company.
Tool support
All eight new PIC microcontroller devices are supported by the full suite of Microchip's development tools, including MPLAB IDE (Integrated Development Environment), the MPLAB ICD 2 (In-Circuit Debugger), and the new PICkit 2 Starter Kit.
