New chip-carrier base design enables low-profile LED units to perform over higher temperatures

27 July 2005 Opto-Electronics

BivarOpto has introduced new surface mount RGB-based devices for optimised control of colour and brightness, including a brilliant-white device with a wide 120° viewing angle, packaged in low-profile, industry standard PLCC-4 (plastic leaded chip carrier). Applications most suited for this package include high-contrast video displays such as LCD monitors, backlighting in automotive dash clusters and exterior automotive lighting, instrument panel backlighting, navigation and switching systems, and medical instrumentation.

The SMLC RGB design features an internal tri-chip circuit, employing three individually addressable LED dies. The lens is water-clear when off. The tri-chip RGB design is comprised of a single AllnGaP and two InGaN/SIC chip dies, featuring peak wavelengths of 625, 568 and 430 nm respectively. The result is a programmable white or brilliant full colour display. Absolute maximum rating of forward current drive is 200 mA.

Other models in the SMLC product family include single and bi-colour chip available in red, green, blue and yellow, including ultra and HE colours such as 395 UV-525 nm pure green. The PLCC-4 configuration, including a 4-pad metal heat dissipating base, measures 1,9 mm high, with footprint of 2,8 x 3,5 mm.
