Piezo sounders have more advantages

If you are using magnetic sound generators in small appliances, you can save space, battery life and money by changing to piezo technology; and you can also adjust the sound quality. Above all, says passives manufacturer, Murata, the piezo device uses much less current.

Current consumption of the magnetic sounder starts around 18 mA, by the time peak-to-peak input voltage reaches 5 V it is drawing some 60 mA from the battery and at 15 V it can take a full 170 mA. By contrast the piezo device starts at zero and never reaches 5 mA. In any mobile appliance that is a great benefit.

Unlike magnetic sounders, the piezo device requires no external components because it is driven by the CMOS microprocessor. It can also be machine- mounted, further reducing costs and improving reliability.
