New 6,9 kA power thyristor

Ixys has added to its range of large area medium voltage thyristors. Manufactured on a single 100 mm diameter silicon wafer, the 5,2 kV device incorporates specially-designed distributed gate architecture for improved turn-on characteristics and di/dt capability along with additional processing to reduce gate charge time and recovery time.

The additional processing used in the medium voltage thyristor gives a more predictable dynamic characteristic than a conventional phase control device, with a more favourable trade-off between the static and dynamic switching performance. Their characteristics make the devices suitable for series operation, with a reduced dependency on high loss dynamic sharing components such as high voltage resistors and capacitors.

The thyristor has an RMS current rating of 6900 A and is suited to all medium voltage applications which require a thyristor with high average current rating including DC drives, soft-starts and utility applications such as HVDC, static VAR compensators, excitation and transfer switches.
