High-performance dual ADCs save board space

18 May 2005 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Analog Devices has introduced what it claims is the industry's first 14-bit dual analog-to-digital converter (ADC), integrating two 14-bit ADCs on a single chip. This innovative IC is the flagship device in a new family of high-speed dual ADCs that ADI is offering in a range of resolutions and speeds.

In 9 x 9 mm chip-scale packages (CSP), the pin-compatible family provides resolutions of 10-, 12-, and 14-bits at speeds of 20 to 105 MSPS. Their unique combination of high speed, high resolution, and compact packaging allows design engineers to use only one chip to achieve the performance of multiple high-speed converters. They are suited for applications that require multiple ADC channels to transfer data at very high speeds, such as 3 G wireless base stations, high-end medical and defence imaging systems, and satellite communications.

The new dual ADC family includes: AD9248: 14-bit dual ADC supporting speeds of 20 MSPS to 65 MSPS with a low power consumption of 300 mW per channel at 65 MSPS; AD9238 12-bit dual ADC offering speeds of 20 MSPS to 65 MSPS, and consuming a low 300 mW per channel at 65 MSPS; and AD9216 10-bit dual ADC with speed grades ranging from 65 MSPS to 105 MSPS. At 105 MSPS, this ADC consumes 150 mW per channel.
