Windows embedded operating systems

20 April 2005 Computer/Embedded Technology

Windows CE 5.0, the current release of the Windows CE Operating System, combines an advanced realtime embedded operating system with the most powerful tools for rapidly creating the next generation of smart, connected, and small-footprint devices. With a complete operating system feature set and comprehensive development tools, Version 5.0 contains the features developers need to build, debug, and deploy customised Windows CE-based devices.

The platform development tool, Platform Builder, is a fully-integrated development environment (IDE) and includes a software development kit (SDK) export tool. Windows CE 5.0 supports Microsoft Embedded Visual C++ and Microsoft Visual Studio.NET, providing a complete development environment for building Web services and applications for the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework, a subset of the Microsoft.NET Framework on the desktop.

With these tools, developers can rapidly build smart designs running rich applications on the latest hardware.

The latest Version 5.0 expands upon the solid foundation developed in previous Windows CE versions by providing:

* Support for secure and scalable networking.

* Enhanced realtime processing.

* Faster performance.

* Richer multimedia and Web browsing capabilities.

* Greater interoperability with personal computers, servers, Web services, and devices.

* Extensive CPU and driver support for wide-range design options.

* Enhanced security and encryption.

Windows XP-Embedded SP2

Windows XP Embedded is the componentised version of the leading desktop operating system, enabling rapid development of reliable and full-featured connected devices. Based on the same binaries as Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded enables embedded developers to individually select only the rich features they need to develop customised, reduced-footprint embedded devices.

Windows XP Embedded delivers reliability, security enhancements, and high performance along with the latest multimedia Web browsing capabilities, and extensive device support. Additionally, as part of Microsoft's commitment to keep the embedded marketplace up to date with the latest Windows technologies, Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 2 also includes componentised features and technologies from Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. This provides embedded device makers with access to the full range of technologies, features and applications available on the desktop.

Windows XP Embedded also incorporates the latest embedded-enabling capabilities such as headless support and flexible boot and storage options, such as Remote Boot. In addition, it contains the Windows Embedded Studio toolset, which provides access to the componentised Windows technologies and enables developers to rapidly configure, build, and deploy smart designs.

The enhancements in Windows XP Embedded with SP2 arm embedded developers, original equipment manufacturers, system integrators and independent software vendors with stronger default security settings, advanced remote device management, and additional networking and multimedia features that enable further device innovation.
