Rotary sensors based on magneto-resistive compounds

Murata offers non-contact sensors based on its own magneto-resistive InSb elements and custom miniaturised circuitry. These provide analog single and digital dual phase outputs. Index phase sensing of target gears, direction and rotational speed and number of gear teeth can all be sensed.

The principle of operation is simple. As magnetic material moves over the face of the sensor, the magnetic flux distribution across internal magnetoresistors varies. This in turn creates a resistance change in the MR elements, which creates a sinusoidal output. When the sensor is placed close to a magnetic gear, the sensor outputs a signal that is synchronised to the rotation of the gear with the number of peaks being proportional to the number of teeth passing over the sensor.

Applications served by these sensors include: motor control in factory automation, linear motion servo direction, servo motor and linear motion in NC machines, robot arms and injection speed of moulding machines.
