Clare has released seven N-channel depletion mode MOSFET devices that feature breakdown voltages between 250-400 V, on resistance (RDSon) as low as 4,0 Ω (max) and IDSS currents up to 300 mA.
The MOSFETS, also used in Clare's popular optical-isolated solid state relays, are now available in space saving SOT-89 and SOT-223 transistor packages. This new offering addresses the increased demand for depletion mode MOSFETS that feature normally closed switch operation, low resistance and a negative temperature coefficient.
The normally-on MOSFETs are well suited for low cost, pre-regulator applications which are tolerant of high voltage drop and power dissipation between the power source and the output regulator stage. The pre-regulator is particularly effective as an inexpensive solution for filtering AC line voltage variations in non-isolated DC power supplies as compared to switch mode power supplies or step down transformers.
The CPC3703C device (250 V, 300 mA) has a low 4 Ω resistance offering a higher efficiency. The SOT-89 package (2,29 x 4,57 mm) offers considerable board savings for small modules and portable products. These features are very important for applications in automotive ignition modules.
The CPC5603C device offers a 405 V MOSFET breakdown for higher voltage applications. In particular, this device is targeted for telecom and 230 V a.c. mains applications. Additional applications for depletion mode FETs include battery chargers, power converters and supplies, linear amplifiers and current surge protection.
