Polymer type chip capacitors for 125°C

9 February 2005 Passive Components

Epcos has unveiled a new series as part of its development program for polymer capacitors that can operate at ambient temperatures up to 125°C and derating (66% of rated voltage). The B4529W series follows the trend toward increased modularisation in on-board switch-mode power supplies for applications in industrial electronics, networks and telecom systems. Here large-scale integration of active and passive components in a minimum of space can easily lead to temperatures above 100°C.

The new polymer types are currently available in cases sizes D or E with capacitances from 100 to 680 μF for rated voltages from 2,5 to 10 V. Equivalent series resistance (ESR) is less than 35 mΩ. Types in case size V are to be added soon.

All series of polymer capacitors from Epcos combine high volumetric capacitance with low ESR. They can be implemented in case sizes B, C, D and E, and as low-profile versions in case sizes R (1,2 mm insertion height), W (1,5 mm) and V (2 mm) for temperatures up to 105°C. The solid electrolyte prevents ageing effects. The polymer series is free of hazardous substances as defined by the RoHS directive.
