8-bit Flash MCU with UHF RF transmitter

3 November 2004 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The MC86HC908QF4 is a member of Freescale Semiconductor's high-performance M68HC08 family of 8-bit microcontroller units (MCU), optimised for low-power operation with an on-chip UHF RF transmitter.

This device is particularly suited for remote keyless entry, tyre pressure monitoring, or other remote sensing and wireless RF data transmission.

With the 908QF4 device, a frequency band switch is possible between 315 MHz, 434 MHz and 868 MHz. This frequency flexibility ensures that the end application can be designed to meet regulations of most countries. Either frequency shift keying (FSK) modulation or on-off keying (OOK) is possible.

The QF family comprises four devices: MC68HC908QF4/3 with 4096 bytes of Flash, and MC68HC908QF2/1 with 1536 bytes of Flash. The 'QF4 and 'QF3 include an 8-bit 4-channel ADC. The devices come in a small 32 pin low-profile quad flat pack (LQFP) measuring 9 mm square.

The devices have a 2,2 to 3,6 V operating range and a power saving 'stop' and 'wait' modes. The maximum internal bus frequency is 2 MHz. Some other features: 128 bytes of on-chip RAM; 16 bits, 2 channel timer interface module; 13 lines of GPIO; 6 bit keyboard interrupt; Watchdog; and trimmable internal oscillator. RF power output with 50 Ω matching network in the 315 and 434 MHz bands is typically 5 dBm, and in the 868 MHz band is 1 dBm.
