TTC and WWG merger sees advantages for Grintek Telecom

8 November 2000 News

The recent merger between network and telecommunication test and measurement giants TTC and Wavetek Wandel Goltermann (WWG) saw the formation of Acterna, now the second largest player in the market.

Says Terry Sanderson, Business Unit Manager, Measurement Solutions at Grintek Telecom, a leading local telecommunications solutions provider, "Acterna is the culmination of the merger between the second and third largest companies in the telecom and network test and measurement industry. While TTC held the lion's share of the USA market, WWG was the major player in Europe, mainly with competitive products for telecom and enterprise networks, digital broadcasting and wireless communications. Traditionally, both companies maintained strong R&D spend for technologies that often competed with each other. The good news for customers is that Acterna has combined the R&D budgets of both companies, now in excess of $130m annually. This will not only see the steady introduction of more new technologies but they will also be faster to market.

"Grintek Telecom has been associated with TTC for more than 10 years, offering measurement solutions such as PHD and SDH analysers, internetworking analysers, ATM frame relay analysers, data communication test sets and centralised test solutions," says Sanderson. "Through Acterna, we will now be able to address areas that were not covered previously by TTC including high-speed communications and enterprise networking systems."

Adds Sanderson, "Grintek Telecom has always maintained a strong share of the local telecom test and measurement market. The South African market has always been seen internationally as steady but the introduction of the third cellular network, a second land-line-based PSTN provider as well as the growth of newer technologies such as IP and ATM will see new opportunities open up in the near future. Grintek is well positioned to take advantage of these opportunities with a test and measurement product range that covers voice, data, wireless, optical, access and IP-based networks."
