3 and 5 W DC-DC converters with high isolation

20 October 2004 Power Electronics / Power Management

The 3 W and 5 W DC-DC converter devices (REC3- and REC5-Series) from Recom International offer 5 kV d.c. isolation in SMD or DIP package. The REC3/5 converters are aimed at applications that demand high safety standards, eg, medical equipment.

The REC3/REC5 converters supply regulated/unregulated single/dual outputs with 3,3, 5, 9, 12, 15 V; ±3,3, ±5, ±9, ±12, ±15 V respectively, and have continuous short circuit protection. The input voltage ranges cover 5, 12, 24 V as well as 4,5-9 V, 9-18 V, 18-36 V and 36-72 V, depending on the type of converter. All converters can be operated at the full 3 W and 5 W without additional cooling over the temperature range -40 to +80°C for the unregulated version, and -40 to +70°C for the regulated types. They are available with 2 kV d.c., 4 kV d.c. and 5 kV d.c. isolation.

The line regulation is specified at ±0,1% typically for regulated, and at 1,2% typically per 1% Vin for unregulated converters. The load regulation from 10% to 100% load is specified at ±0,4% typically for regulated, and at ±10% for unregulated types. The ripple and noise are 50 mVp-p max for regulated and 100 mVp-p max for unregulated versions.

Both ranges can be supplied with metal or plastic UL94V-O cases while custom specific variants are available on request.
