Single switch forward controller helps simplify power supply designs

20 October 2004 Power Electronics / Power Management

Linear Technology's LT1952 is a current mode PWM controller in a 16-lead SSOP package that is optimised for forward converter topology power supply design. The device requires only one primary side MOSFET and provides synchronous rectifier control for high operating efficiency without need for an external MOSFET driver or timing circuitry, says the company.

The LT1952 is designed to simplify the design of 25 W to 300 W power supplies such as isolated 48 V input to 12 V, 5 V or 3,3 V output in industrial or telecom applications. It has a programmable volt-second clamp that provides a safeguard for transformer reset that prevents saturation and protects the MOSFET. This function also allows the use of a smaller transformer, MOSFET and rectifiers, resulting in minimum space for a given output power.

The device includes soft-start function for a controlled exit from shutdown, overcurrent conditions and undervoltage lockout. To improve efficiency while starting conversion from high input voltages, the LT1952 features a micropower 460 μA start-up current and is operational from -40 to 85°C. Because of its programmable slope compensation, leading edge blanking and a true error op-amp, a wide range of inductors and MOSFETs can be used without jeopardising circuit stability.
