Epcos - wherever there is electronics

6 October 2004 News

Electrocomp has been appointed as the official sales office and sole southern African region distributor for Epcos, the German developer, producer and marketer of passive electronic components. Passive components are found in any electronic product, and as the world's largest broadliner and world's second largest in passive components, Epcos offers over 40 000 different products.

The strong focus that Epcos has on innovative customer and application-specific products translates into a high share of business with OEM customers and with distribution accounting for approximately 10%. The major industries its serves are telecoms, consumer electronics, and industrial and automotive electronics. Its largest customers in FY 2003 were Bosch, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Siemens.

Products

Automotive: In recent years all major advances in automotive have been driven by electronics and the electronics content in cars is constantly increasing. Epcos' components serve a variety of safety and convenience functions in vehicles and play a crucial part in modern engine management. With innovative products, for example its piezo stacks, it contributes to significantly reduced fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in engines.

Telecoms: Epcos' components are used in Internet access technologies and both fixed line and mobile telecom applications with the bulk going into mobile phones. The ongoing mobile phone penetration, particularly in Asia, as well as the growing replacement business remain growth drivers. Epcos' miniaturised SAW filters and the integrated LTCC modules support the need for continued miniaturisation and cost reduction in telecom products.

Industrial: The demand for passive components in electronic ballast and energy saving lamps is constantly rising. Factory automation and transportation systems are areas that require more and more of the company's application specific products; such as modern frequency converters and uninterrupted power supplies. Alternative power generation, such as wind and solar power, require innovative capacitors and filters.

Consumer: Whether for improving picture quality in modern multimedia equipment, or satisfying environmental demands of 21st century white goods, such as reduced water and electricity consumption, Epcos offers a unique range of passive electronic components to achieve these goals.

Shareholding

With approximately 111 000 shareholders, Epcos shares are widely held. Retail investors account for 23% of total equity, institutional shareholders hold 52% and Siemens and Matsushita each hold 12,5% - unchanged from the time of the IPO.

The Epcos share is listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange and the other regional exchanges - and in the US on the NYSE.
