Epcos is now shipping polymer tantalum capacitors in case size X, which measures only 1,5 x 7,3 x 4,3 mm wide. The new polymer series, which complements the company's standard tantalum capacitors in case size V, is distinguished from the standard tantalum types by very low ESR (equivalent series resistance), it says. Thanks to their low ESR and compact dimensions, Epcos says the polymer tantalum capacitors are ideal for mobile phones, notebooks, PDAs and other portable equipment.
Two types with a capacitance of 150 µF for a rated voltage of 6,3 V are currently available. ESR reaches a maximum of 40 mΩ in type B45292R1157M41 and 50 mΩ in type B45292R1157M40, and remains stable over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. Operating temperature range is from -55 to +105°C.
Used in power supplies for mobile electronic equipment, for example, the new tantalums means that the number of capacitors connected in parallel can be significantly reduced. Another advantage is that they cannot ignite in the event of failure.
