Passive Components

0,4 mm capacitors have values that range from 21 pF to 10 nF

Capacitors with a maximum dimension of only 0,4 mm? Yes, according to the manufacturer, Murata, these are multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) that have all the usual advantages of COG and with stable high K X5R dielectrics. Full dimensions are 0,4 x 0,2 x 0,2 mm (01005). By comparison with the previously smallest available size (0201) this reduces the PCB footprint by about 50% and volume by roughly 70%.

Electrically, the 33% reduction in length results in lower inductance, further improving the performance at high frequencies, says Murata. The initial capacitance range is between 2 pF in COG dielectric and 10 000 pF in X5R. Making multilayer devices with these dimensions calls for far higher precision fabrication technologies, which the company achieves with enhanced printing, laminating and cutting processes. Used with thin-layer dielectric materials this is what makes values as high as 10 000 pF possible in a 01005 package. Also, terminals have an electroplated structure that offers superior soldering heat resistance.
