When small parts need to be sensed over large distances in harsh environments, the laser distance sensor with time of flight measurement is the solution that Balluff presented at SPS/IPC/Drives 2003.
When traditional methods bump up against technological or economical limits, Balluff's answer is the BOD 63M laser distance sensor using time of flight measurement. This innovative sensor technology offers a variety of output configurations and uses the principle of time-of-flight measurement to provide greater sensing ranges than sensors using triangulation.
They are ideally suited for use in harsh environments, when conditions dictate that the process must be sensed from the outside, or when very small objects have to be sensed over great distances. A further advantage is that within a certain sensing range the BOD 63M operates essentially independently of the reflective or colour properties of the target. This means it can easily detect objects with changing colours, shiny surfaces or at unfavourable angles to the light beam.
The BOD 63M is made with a rugged metal housing and has a working range of 500-6000 mm as well as a background suppression feature. It is offered with a 0-10 V or 4-20 mA analog output as well as PNP or NPN switching outputs. A highly focused, easily visible red laser beam ensures long range with very low grey value shift or hysteresis.
