Battery management products move into smaller mobile devices

10 March 2004 Power Electronics / Power Management

Microchip's PS700 battery monitor provides precise predictions of battery capacity and condition resulting in longer run time and improved system-power management. The device predicts runtime, charge time and battery state of health while accurately monitoring and reporting current operational conditions and battery status.

The battery monitor integrates a precision, programmable, ADC that can be configured to measure voltage, current and temperature with resolutions of 9-16 bits. The device eliminates the need for external components by incorporating a temperature sensor and regulator. Battery information is provided to the host over an industry-standard SMBus interface while battery and user data is stored within the onboard 4 Kbit EEPROM. The PS700 can use an onboard or external temperature sensor to determine battery temperature.

The PS700 operates in four power modes, consuming less than 80 µA in run mode and less than 1 µA in sleep mode. The device supports 1- and 2-cell lithium batteries and 3-to-6-cell nickel metal hydride battery packs.

Microchip offers an evaluation kit PS7070EV, which includes a PS7070 evaluation board, PS700 IC, PS070 PowerMate device programmer and PS051 PowerInfo2 interface board, USB cable and documentation. The PS700 is available in 8-pin TSSOP.
