Dual output PWM controller has integrated overcurrent protection and LDO controller

5 November 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

International Rectifier has introduced the IRU3073 controller IC designed for dual output high performance DC-DC converters. This versatile device is designed for a wide range of compact, high performance synchronous buck regulator applications used in DDR memory circuits, computer graphics cards, desktop and server motherboards.

The integrated low dropout (LDO) controller enables a second output voltage using a single external MOSFET rather than a second circuit, such as another LDO controller. The IRU3073 operates with single supply 5 or 12 V input voltage applications. Both low- and high-side drivers can be biased separately, eliminating external components for charge pump circuitry for 5 V applications when a 12 V bias voltage is available.

The IRU3073 is a synchronous PWM controller with programmable switching frequency from 200 kHz to 400 kHz, capacitor-programmable soft-start, an uncommitted error amplifier for DDR voltage tracking applications and a 0,8 V precision voltage reference for converters with low output voltages.

The IRU3073 monitors the synchronous MOSFET on-resistance for over-current protection, enhancing converter efficiency and reducing cost by eliminating the current sense resistor.
