Lamp resistors from Phoenix Passive Components are designed especially for demanding lamp applications. In mercury and HID lamps the resistors are subjected to high inrush currents, high voltage peaks and high temperatures during operation of the lamp. In spite of these harsh conditions the lamp resistor should show sufficient stability and reliability to support the long operating lifetimes generally specified for such lamps.
The mechanical design of the resistor is based on the standard power resistor design, but materials are chosen to withstand the conditions present in the lamp:
* Resistive material: special metallic compound showing high stability and low temperatures coefficient of resistance at high temperatures.
* Resistor cap: special design and stainless steel for better clamping force at high temperatures.
* Lead wire: copper plated steel wire for good welding.
* Processing: special manufacturing processes and equipment to prevent contamination and outgassing problems.
The performance of the PR-L resistors is in line with the electrical requirements for lamps resistors in ANSI C78.1375-1997. Mechanical performance was tested by exposure to 600°C during three months and no reduction of the mechanical integrity was found. A special temperature cycling test at 600°C was developed to test the reliability of the cap connection and the results obtained were found to be in good agreement with actual results in lamps.
