Ziehl-ebm celebrates 20 years of local representation

30 July 2003 News

Ziehl-ebm, one of the world's largest producers of motorised fans, has now clocked up 20 years of local representation, consultation, supply and service to the HVAC industry. "The parent company traces its roots back to the late 1800s when Emil Ziehl invented and patented the external rotor motor that has become the standard for motorised fans ever since," says Andy Fischer, managing director of Ziehl-ebm SA.

"Over the years since Ziehl motors were first used to power the propellers of the Zeppelins in the early years, the group has focused upon development of motorised fans and the expertise associated with the movement of air for HVAC purposes," comments Fischer. "Heating, cooling, ventilation, airconditioning and refrigeration are the motorised fan functions most recognised. But there are a wide variety of other applications," Fischer continues.

"Your PC, for instance, could not operate if the fan built into the unit did not keep the electronics cooled. The same goes for UPS units and other standby applications. Mobile phone transmitting stations are kept at a regulated temperature, ensuring a stable environment for the electronics to function reliably," he adds. "There are booster fans in cabinet cooling and racking applications as standard stock items within the Ziehl-ebm range, and almost every electronic installation now incorporates sophisticated air management systems. We have water-cooled and cross-flow applications in operation worldwide and the demand for cooling and ventilation in the electronics industry is growing daily," continues Fischer.

"Of course the Babylonians had the best way cool themselves, but a sheepskin suspended from the ceiling of a cave and tugged by a shepherd throughout the night is somewhat outdated," Fischer quips.

"Ziehl-ebm spotted the opportunity early on, jumped in and captured the world market. Now, as our promotional campaign states, 'nothing is quite the same without fans' and Ziehl-ebm are proud to have been around for so long in support of our loyal customers. "Growth and expansion has witnessed the merging and massing of highly specialised fan and associated equipment manufacturers," Fischer states. "The group has expanded to locally-sensitive and self-contained global branches, that as independent outlets, understand their local motorised fan requirements. These regions feed local knowledge and application demands directly back to highly sophisticated research and development facilities.

"From this information and extensive investment in product design, development, testing and tooling for manufacturing commitment, are realised brands like ZIEHL-ABEGG, ebm, Papst, mvl, Systemair, SUED ELEKTRIK to name but a few. Today the group manufactures and distributes about 200 000 fans every day," he says. "Our in-house brands are very well established icons for engineering excellence in fan technology, and we in South Africa are proud to have played an important role in the development of some unique solutions needed to service us here in Africa."

The local South African company first began operations 1983 operating from premises in Strijdom Park and remained there until 1997 when it moved to Honeydew to occupy its wholly-owned, purpose-built head office and logistics premises. The company also operates fully staffed and stocked branches in Cape Town and Durban and retains many focused distributors nationally to service the entire needs of the Ziehl-ebm supply requirement.

"Of course what would life be if we were not famous for other endeavours too," Fischer says. "The Ziehl-ebm Octoberfest held every year in Johannesburg for the last 16 years and in Cape Town and Durban over many recent years, has become legendary."

"But none of this would ever have come about were it not for the fact that the company retains a most talented, experienced and disciplined staff," Fischer says. "We have staff members that have been with us since our early days. Every day they are faced with making our total effort better focused in servicing our customers and our industry. And I wish to thank them all for such dedication."

"Twenty years is not a long time when as a team you are as excited about an industry as we are," Fischer says, "but it is most certainly a very, very long time when we total up the number of fans we have out there. It amounts to literally millions in a wide variety of types, shapes and sizes," he concludes.
