Power supply protects attached devices as well as itself

4 June 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

The Oryx PSUD01 power supply is an advanced self-diagnostic digital regulated DC power supply. In designing this power supply, the manufacturer endeavoured to make it as simple to use, while giving high functionality with full protection to the circuits and devices attached to it.

The PSUD01 is a 220 V a.c. input (fused at 3,15 A), 0-30 V d.c. output at 0-5 A constant current power supply. This output is protected and fused at 6,3 A. The power supply unit also has -12, -5 V and a +5 V fixed voltage, fixed current terminals. This, in about 70% of the cases, eliminates the use of a dual power supply. The usable current on these voltages is 1 A maximum.

The 0-30 V output is short circuit protected. Over voltage and over current shutdown protection occurs within approx 20 ms. The PSUD01 also has thermal shutdown as well as backup thermal shutdown.

The PSUD01 power supply incorporates a microprocessor that keeps a permanent check on its operation. The microprocessor checks all internal voltages and also checks the heat sink temperature as well as over-current and over-voltages. In case of component failure, it shuts down the system accordingly. This minimises damage to the equipment at the output of the power supply as well as the power supply unit itself.
