Industrial Ethernet switch for extended temperature range

21 May 2003 Computer/Embedded Technology

Contemporary Controls' new Industrial Ethernet switch, now a part of the CTRLink family, is very effective for hostile applications with temperatures ranging from -40 to +75°C. The EISX9-100T segments the Ethernet LAN into nine collision domains, acting as a 'bridge' between data links to produce a larger network diameter than is possible with repeating hubs. Each port automatically negotiates its data rate to 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps and controls data flow with the Pause function in full-duplex or the backpressure mode in half-duplex.

The switch learns port assignments by reading Ethernet frames and logging source addresses on a table, which can hold 2048 addresses. With this information, it enhances throughput by restricting traffic to only those ports party to a data exchange. Other data can be simultaneously interchanged on other ports. The store-and-forward process is implemented and broadcast, multicast, or unicast transmissions are received by all ports.

In addition to the power LED, each port has an LED indicating link/activity/data rate by colour: green for 100 Mbps and yellow for 10 Mbps. Other features of the EISX9-100T include mounting on TS35 DIN-rail, operating from a wide-range of low-voltage AC or DC power sources and offering redundant power connections.

The company also offers a free guide '10 issues to consider before installing Industrial Ethernet' as well as an Ethernet installers' slide chart, which packs all of the most important information about Ethernet into a handy pocket reference.
