Update to ISO 9001 standard looms

10 June 2015 News Editor's Choice

ISO 9001, the world’s leading quality management standard, is currently in the fifth stage of a six-stage review process which is due to be finalised by the end of this year, possibly as soon as September.

ISO 9001 is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement. It can be used by any organisation, large or small, regardless of its field of activity, and is currently implemented by more than one million companies and organisations in over 170 countries. Using ISO 9001 helps ensure that customers get consistent, good quality products and services, which in turn brings many business benefits.

All ISO standards are reviewed every five years to establish if a revision is required to keep it current and relevant for the marketplace. The future ISO 9001:2015 will respond to the latest trends and be compatible with other management systems such as ISO 14001. The new version will follow a higher level structure to make it easier to use in conjunction with other management system standards, with increased importance given to risk.

According to Nigel Croft, Chair of the ISO subcommittee revising the standard, “We are on the right track, and we are on schedule for publication. The new version is very strongly based on three basic core concepts: that process approach which was very successful in the 2008 version of the standard superimposed on that system of processes is the plan-do-check act methodology, and a third core concept which is new in the 2015 version is risk based thinking, aiming at preventing undesirable outcomes.”

Upon publication of the update, organisations certified to the current revision, ISO 9001:2008, will have three years to migrate their quality management system to the new edition of the standard if they want to maintain their certification status.
