Accutronics helps children's home

25 January 2012 News

On 12 November 2011, Accutronics Football Club reached out to the children of Ikhaya Labantwana by donating their time as well as much needed groceries, clothes and toys.

Ikhaya Labantwana, which means ‘the home for children’ in Xhosa, is a crèche in Bophelong (a township of Sebokeng). Emily Mamohlale, who founded the home in 2000, is a remarkable woman who identified a dire need for the care of the many impoverished children within her community.

From humble beginnings, initially in an informal house, the home quickly grew, and today Ikhaya Labantwana cares for more than 150 children. The children at the home all come from difficult circumstances. Some of the parents pay a nominal fee for the care, if they are employed and can afford to. Many of the youngsters are, however, children of unemployed parents, who are unable to pay for the care. There are also numerous children who have been orphaned due to the scourge of HIV/AIDS. Many of these children are HIV positive themselves, but regular anti-retroviral treatment ensures they remain healthy.

A heart-warming example of the good work Ikhaya Labantwana does is the case of two brothers that were found living on the streets and searching for food at the local dump. They were taken in and have become well groomed young schoolboys.

Ikhaya Labantwana is situated over four different premises that are in close proximity to each other. The children are grouped in different age groups and cared for by a team of dedicated assistants. But while so many children are cared for, government is only contributing towards the care of 54 children – highlighting the crèche’s need for help.

By taking these circumstances into consideration, it was an easy decision to reach out and support this cause, according to Tobie Müller, managing director of Accutronics, and what transpired was a wonderful, humbling experience for all that attended. “A lot of planning and preparation went into the success of this event and it was wonderful to be offered tremendous support from many people and organisations, contributing in a great way,” he said.

“We were able to fill a car and trailer with provisions for the home, and it was greatly appreciated,” he continued. “What was a revelation though was that what we gave was merely a drop in their ocean of needs, so we are sure to put more effort into supporting this worthy cause again.”

Not content to take all the credit for itself, Accutronics acknowledges the contributions and efforts of the following parties:

* The team members of Accutronics FC for giving their valuable time to attend the event, while also giving groceries, clothes and toys.

* Platynum Interiors for a financial contribution that was used to buy stationery and apples for the kids.

* The staff and friends of Platynum Interiors for donations towards groceries, as well as the baking of cakes and providing decorations (that the girls at the home loved to apply).

* Prellex for supplying boxes of soap and greatly assisting with logistics to prepare for the day.

* Rembrandt Butchery in Linden for lending a braai, braai grids and preparing 120 portions of boerewors for the day.

* Pick ‘n Pay Heathway for cutting and buttering 120 rolls.

* Accutronics, its staff and family for clothes, books, toys, groceries and drinks for the home, and providing the transport, food, snacks and beverages for the day.
