Tribute to Mark Alder

23 November 2011 News

Mark Wayne Alder, founder and director of Shanelo Technologies and 25-year veteran of the South African electronics industry, passed away on the 9 October after having been diagnosed with advanced colon cancer just two months earlier. A fighter to the bitter end, he bravely accepted his fate but fought to keep living every step of the way.

Not even the rapid daily advancement of his illness or the medication and eventual confinement to a wheelchair prevented him from taking an energy sapping one week journey to Mozambique with his dearest friends Mark and Cindy Nelson just to visit a place he loved one more time. This determination was characteristic of Mark throughout his life. The same trait is also evident in his mother and two sisters who courageously fought back the emotions and tended to him from his diagnosis to the end.

Mark made many friends in the electronics industry, both locally and around the world, and he will be sadly missed by all.

As a footnote: no words can describe how wonderful and caring the staff of Hospice Houghton were and how much they made Mark’s final hours more comfortable and dignified.
