Arrow Altech Distribution (AAD), a member of the JSE listed Altech group of companies and NYSE listed electronics distribution giant, Arrow Electronics, was recently rated as a Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Level 5 contributor by the National Empowerment Rating Agency (NERA) under the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) BBBEE Code of Good Practice generic scorecard.
Altech’s philosophy on BBBEE includes a charter for transformation that commits all its group companies to empowerment according to the seven pillars of the DTI’s Codes of Good Practice. These seven pillars are equity ownership, management and control, employment equity, skills development, preferential procurement, enterprise development and socio economic development. In addition to striving to comply with the DTI codes, Altech says it embraces the role it can play in helping to redress historical racial imbalances in the economy of South Africa.
Says acting managing director of AAD, Andréé du Preez, “Transformation is one of Altech’s key focus areas driven by the company’s top leadership. Through its business operations and the supply of products and services, Altech plays a role in supporting government, NGOs and other players in initiatives identified to improve the lives of South Africans. Altech companies have adopted the DTI codes and have incorporated them into their strategic objectives. Altech’s transformation strategy is founded on a commitment to achieving a workforce representative of the demographics of this country, whilst matching available skills and business requirements. This transformation strategy is driven by Altech’s transformation committee, comprising representatives from each operation who are responsible for monitoring and reporting on the monthly progress of transformation elements against agreed targets.”
AAD says it is proud of the fact that full scores were allocated for three pillars of the scorecard, namely skills development, enterprise development and socio economic development. According to human resources manager, Amanda Harvey, this achievement is as a result of the company’s commitment to empowering its employees and its assistance to numerous black owned customers through enterprise development initiatives to grow their businesses. She states that AAD’s sponsorship of the Primrose Primary School in Ekurhuleni was also a major contributing factor.
AAD’s customers can now claim 80% of their total electronic components spend with the company as preferential procurement, which in turn will assist in elevating their own BBBEE status. According to Harvey, “Our commitment to transformation is such that we will not rest on our laurels now that we have been awarded a level 5 BBBEE certification. We are fully committed towards continually improving our BBBEE status.”
