Concilium supports high-school science students

5 August 2009 News

Concilium Technologies has made an initial donation of more than R70 000 to the Kutlwanong Centre’s educational outreach project, a sponsorship which forms part of the company’s CSI campaign, focusing in particular on skills development and upliftment. The Kutlwanong sponsorship will play a complementary role in Concilium’s overall educational sponsorship drive which has in the last 10 years seen the company support tertiary education and more particularly electrical engineering and computer system engineering students at university of technology level.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Steve Alves, managing director at Concilium Technologies says, “Through the last decade we have supported electrical engineering and computer system engineering candidates, initially providing them with their required experiential training, and additional life skills and PC skills. In the last two years, through an SAIEE bursary programme, we have carried all tuition costs for sponsored IEEE candidates.

“The Kutlwanong Centre sponsorship now enables us to reach secondary education learners, enabling organisations such as Kutlwanong to provide crucial math and science skills at high-school level, ultimately functioning as a complementary project to our tertiary support drive.”

Kutlwanong was established by Tumelo Mabitsela, the headmaster of Makhoarane Primary School, as an outreach project. Kutlwanong Centre endeavours to be a leading catalyst in capacity building for the empowerment of under-privileged communities in South Africa. Essentially, the project endeavours to raise the skill levels and subsequent pass rates of matriculants, which in turn provides university exemption and expands career options. The Kutlwanong Centre operates mainly in townships, rural areas and under-privileged communities.

Concilium’s sponsorship will go towards Kutlwanong’s Pro-Science programme (grade 11) which will offer extra lessons to science students. Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners who take science on higher grade, will be selected from local high-schools.
