Concilium awards bursaries to engineering students

9 July 2008 News

Two students have been given the opportunity to study and further their careers in electrical engineering and telecommunications after being awarded bursaries from Concilium Technologies through the bursary schemes initiated by the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE).

The objective of awarding the bursaries is to assist in the development of badly needed skills for technicians and engineers in the light of current engineering and computer system disciplines.

“There is a dire lack of skills in the ICT sector and we have for some time been trying to find a way to provide worthy students with the funding to enable them to succeed in their studies. We wanted to provide assistance to those promising students who just could not raise the funding but had the talent and drive to succeed,” says Concilium’s managing director, Steve Alves.

“The biggest problem we faced was the administration of such a scheme. We found that the SAIEE were offering such administration services and therefore removed the last obstacle for us. These bursaries are administered by the SAIEE, who offer qualified candidates for selection, manage the payments for courses and books, and provide progress reports,” says Alves.

The SAIEE has established a fund specifically dedicated to providing bursaries, loans and awards to applicants pursuing tertiary studies for a diploma in electrical engineering at a University of Technology.

“The SAIEE was approached to administer a bursary scheme for Concilium. We assisted them through our ‘In-House scheme’ which is made available to companies outside of the Institute who would like to make use of the administrative services for bursaries offered by the SAIEE,” says Stanley Bridges, business director for SAIEE.

The students that have been awarded the bursaries have shown a desire to follow a career in systems design and development within the electronics industry, where they would typically be assisting with the test and design of software/hardware as applied to electronic systems.

“Students are helped financially by the bursary award in paying for their tuition fees and books without any obligation to Concilium, except that they should achieve good results in their studies,” says Alves.
