Electrical Contractors' Association concludes wage negotiations

19 March 2008 News

After 11 meetings and a national strike, the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA) and the South African Equity Workers' Association (SAEWA) have finally concluded wage negotiations.

Under the terms of the new agreement, the prescribed minimum wage for all categories of employee will increase by 9% over the rates laid down in the 2007 agreement, while the increase for employees earning above the minimum rate will be 8,6%.

Although it is not enforceable until the minister of Labour has published the agreement in the Government Gazette, the ECA has recommended that it be implemented by employees with immediate effect, since it is possible that it may be backdated to 1 February 2008, proving costly for those slow to respond.
