Industrial semiconductors used in process control reach $6,9 bn

6 April 2006 News

Process control and commercial control constitute the largest single revenue-producing segment for industrial semiconductors, and this is likely to continue into the foreseeable future, as greater innovation evolves industrial market technologies.

Vendors need to be able to provide the products and technologies required as manufacturers become more demanding. But more than that, to be successful, equipment makers must have the ability to serve all or many of a given manufacturer's requirements. In other words, provide customers with a comprehensive vision of future infrastructure, combining hardware and software to provide both factory processes and business processes that work well together.

According to a newly-released study on semiconductors used in the process control application area, research firm Databeans (www.databeans.net) estimates that revenue is growing at an average annual rate of 7%. This $6,9 bn market is expected to reach over $10 bn over the next five years, with most of the growth in product areas such as logic, sensors, and analog.

Commercial control generates considerably more semiconductor revenue than process control, it says. The commercial control segment alone generated over $5 bn for 2005, and process control generated about $1,8 bn for the year. Over the next five years, Databeans expects that commercial control will continue to generate more semiconductor revenue at a faster pace than process control applications.
