Spescom partners with satellite communications company Gilat

22 February 2006 News

In a deal that brings greatly increased potential to the growing market for VSAT (very small aperture terminal), two-way, satellite-based communications in both local and regional markets, Spescom Telecommunications has partnered with multinational company, Gilat, to supply the latest technology in this specialised field.

Mark Goosen, sales director for Spescom Telecommunications, explains: "Spescom specialises in the access network and this is another access technology which enhances our offerings in this area," he says. "The main advantage is that the footprint of the satellite covers all of sub-Saharan Africa, and VSAT connections are especially valuable in remote sites where normal telecommunications infrastructure is limited or non-existent. It is also quick to deploy, which is a key advantage."

"Telkom is our major customer for VSAT. Spescom has a proven track record for fast and effective implementations of solutions, this, coupled with our impressive BEE credentials, makes us a highly competitive player in this market," he adds.

Wayne McDonald, Gilat South Africa general manager, fills in further details. "Gilat is a leader in providing products and services for satellite-based networking systems. We deliver innovative communication solutions that enable any broadband IP, voice and video application," says McDonald. "Our technology minimises or eliminates many of the common problems with satellite systems such as latency - the delay in receiving data - and the previously-limited quality of voice connections when using satellite or IP systems."

"We look ahead to a solid, ongoing relationship with Telkom and the expansion of this market to include many other organisations in South Africa, neighbouring countries and the rest of the continent," says Goosen.

"VSAT is an ideal technology for remote areas which can answer the needs of corporate and public-sector customers in areas as diverse as mining, telecommunications, healthcare and education. It is a technology which makes a significant contribution to bridging the digital divide, supporting the growth of economies and enabling the upliftment of developing communities," he concludes.
