Students at the French South African Technical Institute in Electronics (F’SATIE) and Philips’ industry partners recently had the pleasure of attending a day seminar presented by Dominique Paret, senior technical support manager: automotive and identification at Philips Semiconductors in France.
Paret presented delegates with the latest developments and trends in the global electronics industry focusing on automotive electronics business systems and identification electronics. Some of the topics under discussion included CANbus, LINbus, X by wire, Safe by wire, smartcard chips, biometrics and the latest breakthrough in Near Field Communication (NFC).
F'SATIE is a graduate school developed jointly by France and South Africa with the aim of providing companies with skilled technical manpower in electronics, as well as making quality technical and training programmes available to students from previously disadvantaged groups. F'SATIE also develops an international network by linking SA companies and institutions with their European, Asian and American counterparts. The graduate school is currently incorporated as a module of the Tswane University of Technology and enjoys support from the Paris Chamber of Commerce and the French Embassy.
Damien Chatelaine, senior lecturer at F'SATIE, compliments Philips on taking the initiative to present a seminar that enables students to mingle with industry experts and learn from experienced professionals. "We hope to develop even closer links with Philips and other industry players in the future. We believe it vital that our students relate with companies relevant to their area of interest and learning whilst at university."
Vic Ritson, general manager at Philips Semiconductors, agrees, saying that Philips has a long-standing relationship with F'SATIE, which they hope to build on in the future. "Paret is an industry expert with a vast knowledge of the subject and years of hands-on experience. On the day, students and partners alike had the opportunity to pose questions and discuss technologies that they are interested in. We sponsored his visit to F'SATIE as part of our contribution to upliftment within the industry."
