2003 ‘International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors’ released

11 February 2004 News

The 2003 edition of the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS), a path-breaking, collaborative document which explores key issues and trends in the semiconductor technology reaching 15 years into the future - to 2018 - has been released.

"The global, cooperative efforts of the ITRS have fostered collaboration among international consortia, universities, and research institutions around the world," said George Scalise, SIA president. "We hope that the 2003 ITRS will further contribute to shared R&D investments so that the financial weight of pre-competitive technologies can be equitably shared by the whole industry. This year, the ITRS was developed from a broad international effort with over 900 participants driving the technological trends for 2018."

"The 2003 ITRS has expanded its reach in two directions - the analysis of novel memory devices operating on new principles, which describes new post-CMOS devices, and wireless communications, where, for the first time, the performance of silicon devices and the performance of III-V devices are compared in the application spectrum," said Intel's Paolo Gargini. "These two areas highlight the emergence of nanotechnology operations, as well as the convergence of applications shifting from analog to digital."

The purpose of the ITRS document is to provide a reference of requirements, potential solutions, and their timing for the semiconductor industry. ITRS documents have become a common reference for the entire semiconductor industry.

At time of publishing a copy of 2003 ITRS could be downloaded from http://public.itrs.net/Files/2003ITRS/Home2003.htm
