Profile on Telbit - a designer, developer and manufacturer of electronic equipment

16 July 2003 News

Founded in 1998 by Sam Ashkenazy, Telbit first specialised in products for the mining industry. Over the years the company has established a portfolio of niche customers, with products backed by an international distribution network.

By maintaining a small but effective employee-driven workforce of 20 people, the company has positioned itself as a leader in the design, development and manufacture of electronic boards and systems. Telbit attributes its success to the ability to design and develop products to customer specification, including analog, digital, microprocessor-based, and software (embedded- and system-based) products.

Telbit has been operating from its own premises in Linbro Business Park, Sandton, for three years now. Recently, it acquired a fully automatic SMD pick and place machine to fulfil its mass production requirements. This new machine complements its conventional and wave-soldering production facility.

The introduction of its ISO9002 Quality Assurance program enabled Telbit to work to international quality standards and procedures. Several of its products now bear the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) certification mark.

In 1993 Telbit saw another niche opportunity, and in co-operation with Elster Kent Metering, developed a full range of prepayment water meters, supported by a management system and POS (point-of-sale) vending systems. These products are running successfully in installations across southern Africa. Telbit also participated in working groups convened by the SABS, as well as the STS Association (Standard Transfer Specification), to design an open standard for water prepaid metering.

Another very successful range of products is in the lightning protection industry. These devices, both for outdoor and indoor use, give protection of 8 kA, 15 kA, 40 kA up to 100 kA, with various operating voltages. A distribution network successfully markets these products into Africa and internationally.

Telbit's mining products include shaft signalling and recording equipment, as well as fire detection. Signalling between the winder room and underground levels, are done using the company's Onsitter, Banksman and CallBell units that are based on a bell system. All signalling is recorded using PCs with dedicated interface cards. In the case of an accident or inquiry, valuable information is drawn from the system. Telbit also holds a patent on a unique concept of multiwire signalling, and manufactures the Probell signalling system.

Fire detection is based on its Beacon Detector using a serial communications link to a scada system in a control room. The Beacon Mux is only one of the Supermux range of modules that includes digital input and output, analog input, monitored input and relay output modules.

Over the years Telbit has designed and manufactured a whole range of customer-specific products. Some of these products include airconditioner thermostats for the automotive industry, washing machine controllers, time and attendance systems, and floor level indicators used in lifts, among others.
