Sierra Wireless opens offices in SA

6 August 2014 News

Having enjoyed a long and successful record of involvement in South Africa, Sierra Wireless has taken the next step towards solidifying and expanding its position in the market by opening a local office.

The company’s new South African home away from home is situated in Building 1, Cambridge Office Park, 5 Bauhinia Street, Highveld Techno Park, Centurion, Pretoria.

Andrew Roesch, the man who has lived a somewhat nomadic existence at the helm of Sierra Wireless’s local operation for roughly two years, was understandably eager to commemorate the opening of the company’s new base of operations. Together with the vice president in charge of sales of M2M embedded solutions in the EMEA region, Joachim Dressler, Roesch hosted a diverse group of business partners for a golf day and an informal gathering at the new premises.

As Dressler explained during a presentation he gave during his visit, Sierra Wireless is enjoying a strong run of form at the moment, largely justifying its strategic decision to move away from the market for consumer products and focus purely on M2M. He points to ABI Research showing that the company has established itself as the global market leader in M2M embedded modules, having attained a 34% market share. It is also on an aggressive acquisition campaign, having purchased AnyDATA last October followed by In Motion Technology less than half a year later.

According to Dressler, the technology that came with the purchase of AnyDATA (an M2M embedded module and modem business from South Korea) is expected to provide a strong basis for growth into the future. Meanwhile, In Motion, which carried a $21 million price tag, provided access to a broad platform of device-to-cloud solutions for enterprise customers, from simple gateways to full featured mobile routers, as well as a comprehensive suite of cloud services and applications.

Its new South African office shows clearly that Sierra Wireless sees plenty of promise in the local market, and Roesch will be looking to take maximum advantage of its strong technology portfolio and enhanced local presence to expand the company’s market share in the region.
