Vision Research announced the Phantom v2010, the newest addition to its 1 megapixel digital, ultra-high-speed camera line.
With the ability to capture more than 22 000 frames per second (fps) at full resolution, it is almost 40% faster than the previous generation Phantom v1610.
Built with high-definition and widescreen 1280 x 800 CMOS sensors, the new model features large, 28 micron pixels that allow for superior sensitivity when shooting in low light, which is often a problem with high-speed imaging. With sensitivity as high as ISO 5000 (daylight illumination) for colour images and ISO 25000 for monochrome images, less illumination is needed to capture and slow down the action.
An important consideration when comparing cameras is what method of testing is used. Some datasheets present different methods which are not always comparable to the above figures, or even use sensitivity results based on full available manipulation and enhancement.
At ultra-high speeds, memory can become a limiting factor in camera performance because of the huge amount of data that is acquired. To mitigate this, the v2010 can be configured with 24, 48 or 96 GB of memory, which can be segmented into as many as 63 partitions. This allows for the continuous shooting of back-to-back shots without the need for constant downloading.
The camera also offers 12-bit pixel depth, which yields high dynamic range and provides excellent image quality. Internal fans keep it cool, especially during outdoor use, but can be temporarily switched off for applications – such as microscopy – that are sensitive to vibration.
As with its predecessors, the v2010 comes standard with its manufacturer’s CineMag interface, which allows the user to save a high-speed shot from camera memory to non-volatile storage in a matter of seconds. With the ability to save 1 GBps of data to an attached CineMag, a 96 GB shot can be saved in about 1,5 minutes.
The camera also features image-based auto-trigger; a 10 Gb Ethernet port; internal mechanical shutter; SMPTE and IRIG timecode, genlock, ready and strobe outputs; frame synchronisation to internal or external clock; HD-SDI video outputs; component viewfinder port; and Nikon F-mount lens connection with Canon EOS, PL and C mounts available.
