Nordic Semiconductor has expanded its Bluetooth Smart offering with the release of a new software development kit (SDK) for Arduino-based projects and a new protocol stack.
The SDK is compatible with a range of Arduino, ChipKIT shields that employ the nRF8001 Bluetooth Smart connectivity device. The software interface has been implemented on a variety of microcontrollers and microcontroller platforms such as ChipKIT, Maple, Teensy, mbed and others. This wide coverage makes it easy to move a project that has been prototyped on the Arduino platform to a platform and microcontroller of the engineer’s choice.
The Bluetooth Smart SDK is complemented by the Bluetooth Smart BLE Arduino shield from Red Bear Lab. The board complies to the Arduino form factor and contains all necessary circuitry to enable an Arduino project to start communicating with Bluetooth Smart Ready products such as an iPhone 4S or later, smartphones using Android 4.3 or later, OS X Mountain Lion and later, as well as Windows 8 and later.
The feature-rich new protocol stack – the S130 SoftDevice – allows the development of Nordic nRF51 series SoC-based wearable Bluetooth Smart hub network topologies such as smart watches with peripheral wireless sensors that don’t always need a smartphone present to operate.
It is Bluetooth 4.1 compliant and includes all Bluetooth Smart protocol layers up to and including GATT/GAP. It supports multi-link central, peripheral, observer and broadcaster roles, GATT server and client, and event-driven, asynchronous and thread safe GATT/GAP and L2CAP APIs. An added feature is over-the-air device firmware upgrade capability.
