Cabling for renewable energy installations

18 September 2013 Interconnection

German cable manufacturer Helukabel is experiencing strong demand in South Africa for its cabling solutions in local renewable energy projects, according to the local subsidiary. According to managing director, Doug Gunnewegh, this is thanks largely to the fact that the company’s solar and wind power station cabling carries all the necessary certifications from worldwide quality and accrediting agencies, ensuring that they perform to the required specification for conductivity, strength and durability.

With a strategy of providing a full basket of power transmission, control instrumentation, data, security, medium voltage, telecommunications and torsion cables, the company recently moved to larger premises in northern Johannesburg in order to house the amount of stock required to ensure supply availability.

For solar installations, Helukabel’s Solar-flex-X PV1-F solution is able to withstand the harsh environments of solar plants with an anticipated service life of 25 years. The cables are ozone, UV and weather resistant and are highly resistant to chemical interference, as well as fire and abrasion. In addition, they can be made in a rodent resistant version or to customers’ exact requirements for specific sites.

The bare copper, tinned and finely stranded cable is double insulated with cross linked Polyolefin while the outer sheath comprises the same material in a black, red or blue. The nominal voltage is rated at 600/1000 V a.c. and 1800 V d.c.

Preassembled cables, connectors and tools for professional assembly of photovoltaic cells are also available.

As for wind turbine solutions, these include cables for transmission, torsion, control, data and tower cables. Infrastructure and communications cables are also available, as are accessories and connectors that have been specially developed for the wind power generation industry.
