Programmable power supplies

As an authorised distributor of the TDK-Lambda product range, Accutronics is able to offer the manufacturer’s wide range of high-performance programmable power supplies to satisfy a multitude of requirements.

To cater for a wide range of applications, TDK-Lambda has four different solutions to offer in the GEN series, ZUP series, series and the newly released EVA series. The products are well suited to applications including test and measurement, ATE, semiconductor burn-in, component test, laser diode, heater supplies, RF amplifiers, electromagnets, Li-ion and other intelligent battery charging systems, water purification and X-ray scanners.

The Genesys (GEN) series is TDK-Lambda’s flagship product, and is available with output power ranging from 750 W to 15 kW. The units are packaged for 19” rack-mounting and are offered in standard heights of 1U (750 W, 1,5 kW or 2,4 kW), 2U (3,3 kW or 5 kW) or 3U (10 kW or 15 kW).

The 750 W models are also available as half-width units (GENH), and allow side-by-side rack mounting while maintaining the height of 1U. The programmable output voltage ranges are available from 0–6 V to 0–600 V, with output current ranges available from 0–2,6 A to 0–1000 A. Parallel operation allows connection of up to four identical units.

The Genesys models feature active power factor correction and extensive safety features, including user-selectable safe-start and auto-restart options. With safe-start, the power supply returns to the last used settings after a power interruption, but with the output disabled. With auto-restart, the supply resumes normal operation without intervention after a power interruption, thereby meeting typical requirements for unattended use.

Common to all Genesys models is a built-in RS-232/485 interface. Using this, up to 31 power supplies may be controlled in daisy chain over an RS-485 line. Analog remote programming is user selectable

0–5 V or 0–10 V via DIP switches on the rear panel.

Other optional digital and isolated analog interfaces are IEEE (IEEE-488.2 and SCPI compliant) and LXI-compliant LAN. Isolated analog programming options include either 0–5 V and 0–10 V, or 4–20 mA control.

ZUP.

The Zero-Up (ZUP) series is targeted at a multitude of applications, offering 200 W, 400 W or 800 W in a compact package that is designed to be compatible with 19” rack mounting. They have a height of 3U and up to six units can be fitted side-by-side in an optional rack mounting chassis. An optional carrier allows for two units to be configured as a portable dual-output bench supply. Output terminals are located on the rear of the units and an optional bottom-fitting bracket provides front terminals.

Models in the ZUP series are available with output voltages up to 120 V d.c. and output currents up to 132 A. All models can be programmed via the front panel or remotely using RS-232/485 and analog interfaces, which are built in as standard. Optional isolated analog programming interfaces are available, as is a separate GPIB (IEEE488) module.

The next generation of the ZUP, the Z+ series features a reduced height of only 2U while offering output power of 200, 400, 600 or 800 W. The high density allows for mounting of up to six units in a 19” rack width. Output terminals are located on the back of the units, or they can optionally be offered with front output test terminals.

Models in the Z+ family are available with output voltages up to 100 V d.c. and output currents up to 72 A. The units can operate in either constant current or constant voltage modes and accept a universal (85–265 V a.c.) input. Higher-power systems can be achieved by connecting up to six identical units in parallel with active current sharing. To increase the output voltage or to provide a bipolar output, up to two units may be connected in series.

All models can be programmed via the front panel or remotely using USB, RS-232/485 and analog interfaces, which are built in as standard. Optional LAN, GPIB (IEEE488) and isolated analog programming interfaces are available.

As part of the EVA series, the latest addition to the family is the EVA2400 2,4 kW, 2U industrial programmable power supplies, which operate in either constant current or constant voltage modes and accept a 170 – 265 V a.c. (47–63 Hz) single phase input. The package size of 250 x 86 x 445 mm, weight of under 7,5 kg and internal cooling fans mean that the EVA2400 offers flexibility for mounting orientation and location within an OEM system.

Models in the EVA series are available with output voltage ratings of 15–150, 30–300 and 60–600 V d.c. with corresponding output current adjustment ranges of 0–16, 0–8 and 0–4 A to achieve the 2,4 kW output power. Up to four units can be operated in parallel (in master/slave mode) to increase total output power.

The EVA2400 achieves exceptionally high efficiency (typically 88% at full load) for a programmable power supply, which not only minimises the generation of unwanted heat but also reduces wasted power. In addition, variable fan speed control (ambient temperature and load dependent) helps extend fan life and considerably reduces audible noise at room temperature.

All EVA2400 models can be programmed via the built-in RS-232/485 and analog interfaces, and a PC-based GUI is included. On the rear panel there are three green LEDs indicating when the output is on, and whether the unit is operating in CV (constant voltage) or CC (constant current) mode.

A fourth alarm LED blinks red in case of a fault condition, such as OVP, OTP, output off and AC fail. The over-voltage trip point can be preset (at 10 – 110% of rated output) via the communication port, as can the output under-voltage limit to prevent adjustment of the Vout below the limit.
